Dumpling Lasagna

A creative and deeply comforting fusion dish that layers thin dumpling wrappers with savory ginger-garlic pork filling, hoisin-soy sauce, and melted cheese. Easier and faster than traditional lasagna with a flavor profile that is entirely its own.

Ingredients

  • 1 pounds Ground pork
  • 2 cups Napa cabbage
  • 3 Garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoons Fresh ginger
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoons Sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoons Rice vinegar
  • 0.5 teaspoons White pepper
  • 2 Green onion stalks
  • 1.5 cups Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.3 cups Grated parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 cups Ricotta cheese
  • 45 Round dumpling wrappers
  • 1 cups Chicken or vegetable broth
  • 3 tablespoons Hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoons Chili garlic sauce
  • 1 teaspoons Sesame oil

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large skillet or saute pan
  • Mixing bowl (medium)
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Sheet of aluminum foil
  • Box grater (for parmesan)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish
  2. Cook ground pork in a skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up until no longer pink
  3. Add garlic and ginger, cook for 60 seconds until fragrant
  4. Add shredded napa cabbage and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened
  5. Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and white pepper, then remove from heat and fold in green onions
  6. Whisk together broth, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, and sesame oil in a bowl to make the sauce
  7. Spread a thin layer of sauce on the bottom of the baking dish
  8. Layer dumpling wrappers across the bottom, overlapping slightly
  9. Add a layer of pork filling, dot with ricotta, drizzle with sauce, then add another wrapper layer
  10. Repeat layers 3 to 4 times, finishing with wrappers on top
  11. Pour remaining sauce over the top layer of wrappers
  12. Scatter mozzarella and parmesan over the entire surface
  13. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes, then uncover and bake for 10 more minutes until cheese is golden and bubbling
  14. Rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving

Notes

  • Do not skip the resting time before slicing. It makes a real difference in how cleanly the lasagna holds together when served.
  • The sauce quantity matters more in this recipe than in traditional lasagna. Dumpling wrappers absorb liquid quickly, so be generous between layers.
  • Leftovers reheat beautifully and the flavor deepens overnight in the fridge. This is a great make-ahead meal.
  • If you cannot find round dumpling wrappers, square wonton wrappers are a perfectly good substitute and widely available.
  • For a crispier cheese top, switch to broil for the last 2 to 3 minutes of baking and watch carefully to avoid burning.
